Campfires, and deserts: travels in the wilderness

Deserts are places of wonder.
This is our love letter to the Namib Desert. Deserts aren’t for everyone. A friend visiting Namibia was told not to bother driving through the Namib desert as there was ‘nothing to see’.
The Namib Desert is the oldest desert world. Its landscape has changed little over the millennia. It may appear to be just rocks, but the story of our planet is told in those rocks. It may seem empty, but animals living in this emptiness display amazing feats of survival. It may be thought of as uninhabited, but the few people who make it their home demonstrate incredible inventiveness and resilience.
In 2024 Nigel and I hired an expedition land cruiser with a roof top tent and, driving on 4 x 4 tracks, we immersed ourselves in the wilderness. We camped where our companions were wild animals; we met inspirational people, and spent ten days with a family of desert elephants. Our account of that trip is here.
We spent another wonderful time immersed in the Namib Desert in 2025. Photos from that trip are here.
